Wireless Electricity

January 2, 2010

My post on December 29th discussed some important trends that will start this year and become major developments during this new decade – crowd sourcing, augmented reality and hybrid power. There is a fourth trend that may take a few years to develop, but once perfected it will be a game changer. This category is inductive coupling/wireless electricity. Many universities and several noteworthy companies, including Google, are working on wireless electricity.

Where I see this technology making a difference is in short distance charging of devices and products that use batteries. Imagine not having to plug in your mobile phone or computer to a charger, but just placing theses devices within a few feet of a single charging port! For electric vehicles, these units could be near parking places and garages, with no need to physically plug in wires.

Below is an interesting video showing a prototype inductive coupling device developed by Fulton Innovation and a video from a previous CES.
