5 W’s Plus an H and Because
I’m looking forward to speaking at a number of industry events this year. The theme for these talks is manifesting Peter Drucker’s famous quote “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
I’ve had the good fortune of collaborating with others to create some interesting and successful businesses and I’m often asked for tips on how to succeed. There are many great Internet sources for startups, including OnStartups, TWiST, Feld Thoughts and AVC, to mention but a few. So, instead of duplicating content from others, my approach is to talk about simple ways to get started.
Starting today and every first Monday each month this year, I will write about basic tools you can use to predict your future by creating it.
Startup Tip #1 – Be Great At Asking and Answering Key Questions
Young journalists are taught to ask and obtain answers to six key questions in order to gather background for a story. These questions start with Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. I have found in my career, that all too often aspiring entrepreneurs forget to ask and answer these questions before they embark upon any important path. If you get into the habit of asking and answering these simple questions, you will make better and more informed decisions.
The other important word is Because. When making a statement or answering a question, state your position, but take the time to follow up with because… This tip will help you express your position AND support it with rationale.
