Mars Rovers – Worthy Of A Nobel Prize?

January 28, 2010

Most have us have forgotten about Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. These amazing robots may be forgotten, but they’re not gone…yet. This month marks the 6th anniversary of when these machines were deployed onto the surface of the red planet. Spirit arrived on Mars on January 3, 2004, followed by Opportunity on January 24, 2004. These rovers were initially expected to last 3 months in the harsh environment of Mars. Spirit is presently stuck in a sand trap, but continues to operate and send back photos and data as a stationary research platform. Opportunity is mobile and driving to Concepcion Crater. These robots are an unprecedented achievement in physics and I think NASA deserves the Nobel Prize in recognition of this amazing feat.
