Apple & Social Gaming
Last Thursday, Apple announced the updated iPhone operating system, iPhone OS 4, featuring multitasking. Perhaps it was the hangover effect from the iPad launch, but this announcement seemed to fall on deaf ears. Part of the mobile OS update involves Apple’s Game Center, a social gaming platform for the iPhone and iPod Touch (and we assume, eventually the iPad). The Apple Game Center will allow friend invitations and multiplayer games with score tracking.
I guess this is Apple’s attempt to compete with Facebook in the highly lucrative social gaming market. GigaOM wrote this week that gaming company Zynga, maker of six of the seven most popular social games, may be worth $5 billion.
The social gaming market is here to stay and growing exponentially. It should be interesting as companies like Apple seek to grab some market share from Facebook and others.
