Largest Wind Project In U.S.

August 7, 2010

Ground was recently broken for Alta Wind Energy Center, the largest wind power project in the U.S. Located 75 miles from Los Angeles in the Mohave Desert foothills at Tehachapi Pass in Kern County, California, Alta could produce 3 times as much energy as the country’s largest existing wind farm. The project’s developer, New York-based Terra-Gen Power, says the project, when completed, will produce 3 gigawatts of power. A gigawatt is 1 billion watts of power. As a reference, 1 megawatt of energy can power up to 300 home for a year. A gigawatt equals 1,000 megawatts, so this project has the capacity to power 900,000 homes.
